HISTORY OF GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY IN TURKEY
In Turkey, the first Gynecologic Oncology Department was founded in Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine by the decision of the Council of Higher Education. Thereafter, the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine Gynecologic Oncology Department was founded in 1990.
Before official departments, there were units of gynecologic oncology in Turkey. Gynecologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists that studied and worked abroad were the leading physicians in these units.
After finishing his training in Germany, Dr. Ertuğrul Yenen started to perform modern cancer surgeries in 1950 while Dr. Cevat Babuna carried out operations in the 1970s following his training in America. Afterward, Dr. Ergin Bengisu and Dr. Sinan Berkman had an active role in establishing the department of gynecologic oncology. In that period, Dr. Nejat Bilge and Dr. Gökhan Töre from radiation oncology and Dr. Erkan Topuz from medical oncology had several applications and studies on gynecologic oncology.
Dr. Hüsnü Kişnişçi, Dr. Nuri Sağıroğlu, Dr. Emek Özen, Dr. Mustafa Sipahioğlu, and Dr. Dinçer Fırat founded the council of gynecologic oncology in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1965. After training in Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Mustafa Tuncer and Dr. Sakıp Pekin, trained in Newcastle, joined the group. Ali Ayhan, trained in America, joined the unit in 1982.
Dr. Turgay Atasü, trained in Vienna, and Dr. Selçuk Erez, trained in America, started to perform radical cancer surgeries in Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine founded in 1967. The same year, Dr. Servet Güvener, a gynecologist from Germany, has carried out clinical applications and research in gynecologic pathology. In 1976, Dr. Engin Erkün and 1977, Dr. Derin Kösebay participated in gynecologic oncology practices afterward. In that period, Dr. Reha Üzel from radiation oncology and Dr. Bülent Berkarda from medical oncology conducted research and practice focusing primarily on gynecologic oncology.
Dr. Ziya Durmuş and Dr. Orhan Karacadağ have been known to perform gynecologic oncology surgeries in Zekai Tarık Burak Hospital since 1968.
The gynecologic oncology unit was founded in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1970 and Dr. Hikmet Yavuz was in charge of the unit. They continued the gynecologic oncology practice by performing many radical surgeries.
Dr. Mustafa Eminoğlu founded the gynecologic oncology department in Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1977 and started to carry out radical cancer surgeries. Dr. Yılmaz Dikmen carried on to the research gynecologic oncology department afterward.
Dr. Orhan Karacadağ and then Dr. Sinan Özalp conducted research and practice in the area of gynecologic oncology in Osman Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1977.
Dr. Oktay Ertem started to perform gynecologic oncology surgeries for the first time in 9 Eylül Faculty of Medicine in 1982.
Gazi University Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1982. In 1988, the professorship committee decided to establish a gynecologic oncology unit and Dr. Haldun Güner was the head of the department.
Dr. Nihat Arıdoğan was leading the gynecologic oncology practices for the first time in Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Saim Mermut initiated gynecologic oncologic practices in Gülhane Faculty of Medicine and since 1989, Dr. Saffet Dilek carried on gynecologic oncology practices.
Gynecologic oncology practices that were mostly carried on independently across the country made it obligatory for a joint society. As a result, Gynecologic Oncology Society was founded by gynecologists and obstetricians Dr. Turgay Atasü, Dr. Sakıp Pekin, Dr. Selçuk Erez, Dr. Engin Erkün, Dr. Derin Kösebay Dr. Teksen Çamlıbel and Dr. Kılıç Aydınlı in 1989. The society was named as Turkish Gynecologic Oncology Society in the years that soon followed.
Since its foundation, the Turkish Gynecologic Oncology Society holds National Gynecologic Oncology Congress biannually. Also, regional meetings are organized in different parts of Turkey since its foundation.
Our society held the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) Congress in 2005 in Istanbul. Furthermore, our society held scientific meetings in cooperation with international and regional gynecologic oncology societies in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Dubai, Beirut, and Abu Dhabi.
Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health recognized gynecologic oncology surgery as a separate field in 2011 and physicians with adequate experience and research in gynecologic oncology were certified as gynecologic oncology surgery specialists. As of this date, after taking an exam, gynecologists and obstetricians trained for 3 years in well-equipped centers of gynecologic oncology, graduated, and started to practice as gynecologic oncology surgery specialists.
Since 2013, gynecologic oncology centers were evaluated on demand in terms of the number of patients, multidisciplinary approach, laboratory infrastructure, and the number of scientific publications by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO). In this regard, centers meeting the eligibility requirements were certified as centers for gynecologic oncology training and advanced ovarian cancer surgery.
Dr. Ali Ayhan, considered as a pioneer of gynecologic oncology in Turkey, was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) in 2016 and by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) in 2019.
In 2018, gynecologic oncology centers began to be a part of international multicentered studies thanks to our society.
Turkish Gynecologic Oncology Family is striving for the prevention, protection, and treatment of gynecologic cancers in Turkey by focusing on its visions and missions and has a positive outlook on the future.
