In Turkey, the first Gynecologic Oncology Department was founded in Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine by the decision of the Council of Higher Education. Thereafter, the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine Gynecologic Oncology Department was founded in 1990.

Before official departments, there were units of gynecologic oncology in Turkey. Gynecologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists that studied and worked abroad were the leading physicians in these units.

Our society held the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) Congress in 2005 in Istanbul. Furthermore, our society held scientific meetings in cooperation with international and regional gynecologic oncology societies in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Dubai, Beirut, and Abu Dhabi.

Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health recognized gynecologic oncology surgery as a separate field in 2011 and physicians with adequate experience and research in gynecologic oncology were certified as gynecologic oncology surgery specialists. As of this date, after taking an exam, gynecologists and obstetricians trained for 3 years in well-equipped centers of gynecologic oncology, graduated, and started to practice as gynecologic oncology surgery specialists.

Since 2013, gynecologic oncology centers were evaluated on demand in terms of the number of patients, multidisciplinary approach, laboratory infrastructure, and the number of scientific publications by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO). In this regard, centers meeting the eligibility requirements were certified as centers for gynecologic oncology training and advanced ovarian cancer surgery.

Dr. Ali Ayhan, considered as a pioneer of gynecologic oncology in Turkey, was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) in 2016 and by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) in 2019.

In 2018, gynecologic oncology centers began to be a part of international multicentered studies thanks to our society.
